Susan Leclercq is project manager at the Amsterdam Law Hub.

Tell us about your work

I work at the Amsterdam Law Hub; a unique environment where law students, academics, and professionals collaborate on innovative legal projects, with a particular emphasis on social (non-financial) impact. As a project manager I initiate, design and manage projects that are centered around legal innovation, social justice, and improving access to justice. The projects that I set up address societal issues through legal means, for example by providing legal assistance to marginalized communities, advocating for human rights, or working on legal reforms that promote social equity. My main focus is to engage with students, researchers and entrepreneurs to identify ways to increase access to justice and act as a resource for marginalised or underserved communities. In collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam and an NGO I have established the Vrouwenrechtswinkel which focuses on empowering women by helping them understand their legal rights and navigate various legal challenges. The center offers free legal consultations to women on a wide range of issues, including family law (such as divorce, custody, and alimony), employment law, immigration law, and social security. The organization pays special attention to supporting vulnerable women, including those who may be facing domestic violence, discrimination, or financial difficulties. Newly started projects of mine include the Schuldenbrug ( an initiative designed to help individuals who are struggling with debt by giving legal advice to their intermediaries), Sterk op je werk (in collaboration with vocational (MBO), higher professional (HBO), and university (WO) education institutions to have students develop practical solutions to strengthen their legal position at the workplace and Recht in de Klas (a project to introduce primary school students to the law). To aid the projects, I build extensive outward facing relationships with both grass roots organisations and community leaders as well as state institutions like municipalities, ministries (J&V and SZW) and the Dutch legal aid board.

What is your motivation?

For me a powerful driving force is the ability to contribute to advocating for and implementing legal reforms that improve the system for everyone, making it more equitable and efficient. And ensure people, regardless of their background or financial status, don’t fall through the judicial cracks. Besides a strong drive to improve the lives of others, a powerful sense of purpose and fulfillment in my work is being surrounded by a passionate team focused on the ambition to achieve personal and professional goals.

Your vision

My vision is that in the designing of justice solutions we include communities and groups more: effective and equitable justice systems must be informed by the voices and experiences of those they serve. Directly involving communities in the design of justice solutions ensures that these solutions are specifically adapted to the unique challenges and needs of those communities. By gaining insight into the particular circumstances, cultural contexts, and obstacles that different groups encounter, justice solutions can become more practical and effective in tackling real-world issues.

Supporting factors

Supporting factors in my work include my team, grassroots and social organizations in the field, as well as the various partners who share our vision and recognize the importance of our approach in creating legal innovation and social impact, and who are willing to financially or otherwise contribute to our efforts.
